Something to the name and branch out
Historical sphere in the "Good Old Epoch"
If a researcher might take up the track to Portugal ...?!
Odd facts, great?
Persons with specially relevant to my genealogy
Devotedly to the children,
to her parents, grandparents, aunts...
" Holes in the belly ask ".
And from me hope,
to give to the interviewees with my "writings" a small help.
The countries of France, England, Spain, Portugal and Italy are not to be excluded for his origin, if you see by his name and please note the tumultuous political and religious relations in the Palatinate.
Where and when is born the first forefather Franz CANTON (Canto, Candio, Cando)? Who can give me in addition tips or already has information of it?
In the church registers of D-Waldböckelheim/ the Rhine Palatinate: CANTON, CANTO, CANDO, CANDIO.
In the church registers of D-Stettin (PL-Szczecin)/ Western Pomerania (Vorpommern) (after the immigration from the Rhine Palatinate):
CANTOW and in the beginning still CANTO. K.Haase, in 1978, page155 [VP03].
To the manner of writing CANTON and his a lot of variations and possible origins there is a very interesting and extensive English side of Sheila Rowlands.
1. 1748 named CANTOW, settled to WESTERN POMERANIA: From Schlossböckelheim to D-Hoppenwalde/ Western Pomerania
2. 1750 named CANTO, settled to RHINELAND: From Schlossböckelheim to D-Jülich/ Lower Rhine .
3. 1784 named KANTON, settled to BANAT: From Schlossböckelheim to H-Lowrin/ Banat (southeast from H-Szeged. LOVRIN today in Romania)
One more supplement to the cause of a lot of writing variants (CANDO, CANTON, CANTO, CONTTON, KANTO, KANTON, KONTO) in Hungary in the Banat:
To become "spoken" into Hungarian as a CANTO, must become "C" to "K" and receive "A" an accent, thus K Á NTO "written".
The "written" name CANTO is "spoken" in the Hungarian ZONTO! Grieben Guide Hungary in 1966, page 15 [BA03].
4. 1785 Marriage named CANTON in Wien: From Schlossböckelheim, son of Johann Peter CANTON Schlossböckelheim/ the Rhine Palatinate, marries 4.4.1785 in A-Wien II, Saint Joseph the ROBOUGE, Anna Elisabeth from Sobernheim/ the Rhine Palatinate, father Td. Dominik Robouge is an ornamental gardener. Is it possible that he was on the traveling to Hungary!?
... and last but not least there is Gayo, page274 [AL02] a nobility family CANTO in Portugal with name derivation from English KENT (Latin CANTIUM) where it 1036 a Godhino Conde Cantio gives.
One checks at the person that he cannot have the maturity of the age in the youth yet. In the history of a state or continent one is to the general acceptance that from mistakes is learned, however, a look in the history and is also already often enough the experience of a single person, teaches to us something else! The following saying reflects this view again:
The life is an test,
ends always lethally!
It has so still proved itself no social structure that this saying does not count. Nevertheless, it will not be possibly the slavery, of course with a new label and that only everybody is his own slave the solution of the problem!?
With "Freedom as an examination into the necessity" one can remove many problems from the world. Because, however, according to experience most people understand her own freedom the very first under it always, it also comes here over and over again to problems.
The Catholic Upper Bavarian vernacular has summarized the whole topic very nicely as follows:
One must owe God for everything,
also for the Upper-, Lower- and Central Franconia!
It is as it is, my "findings" is for continue thought!
The serfing is not to be equated with the slavery, because the serfing was limited austerely and exactly was codified. The farmers in serfing (e.g., hereditary subject) managed own courts and had to pay to aristoccrat rent (Gült) and drudgery (team farmer, hand farmer) (in Silesia: Robotbauer). They might own private property, indeed, no real-estate and her movement space was limited.
During the wedding of serfs became valid the "right of the first night" (IUS PRIMAE NOCTIS) to aristocrat. In which scale was made use of it, is controversial. This right was substituted later with the tax of virginity. With the death of a serf a best head (Besthaupt) was to be delivered to aristocrat. Aristocrat was responsible for the security of the serf and had to put a legal adviser to him with legal disputes.
A specific feature with the east colonization was the Lokator. He was the lessor of farmland to the colonists by order of owner. Later he became often the mayor or patron with jurisdiction and brewing right and other rights. Thus he lived in Silesia then in the "Gerichtskretscham", i.e. as a mayor in the inn with low jurisdiction.
The farmer (with ~24ha, also farmer, open air farmer, Hufner named) reported directly on the basis of the law of fief (Kolonat) only to the sovereign. Then further gradations of the farmer were:
Halffarmer: Halbbauer (Halbspänner, Halbhufner)= 12ha
Quarterfarmer: Viertelbauer= 6ha
Gardener: Gärtner (Schulzen-, Pfarr-, Lehnsgutgärtner)
Small farmer/ worker/ Teacher: Kossäten, Häusler, Büdner, Arbeiter, Lehrer
Tenant: Inlieger= Mieter
Colonist: Kolonist= als Bauer, als Kossät, als Arbeiter
A human life under a easier conditions was in the "Good Old Epoch" no walk and is not it today also!
Because mostly our forefathers have lived in a easier conditions, all works, as far as one was able in addition, were done in the family or in the village community. Nevertheless, a farmhand or a maiden in the household was the big exception!
With the often big child number the life was especially heavy for the women:
All laundry had to be washed with the hand, pull cooperation on the field, kitchen work with combustion of wood, sewed and mending with the hand, and raise, besides, the growing up children ... There one can read in the church registers already with children and old people: death by the emaciation (tuberculosis).
If with the farmer the woman becomes ill, the doctor is not called as quickly as possible, the cow must already become ill there!
The sovereigns were also mostly tormented by the high spirits and thus the a little quieter post-war period developed very fast with view of a prewar time!
Cause was mostly: has inheritance disputes, religion wars, revenge, greed, raw materials, overpopulation, underpopulation ... and the other or the bad neighbor are in debt always. Stronger is in right always !
A very joyless extra results of the 30-Year-Old War for the today's forefather researchers is that the church municipalities at that time, with often varying inspirations of the rabble of soldiers, did not know how to help themselves differently than to burn the available church registers to escape with it the reinforced tortures because of her belief.
If the public treasury was emptied by the lost wars and huge debts was accumulated, then one helped himself to the tax screw to begin the practise anew (to plan!?).
With the industrialization about 1900 the everyday life of the people changed by rail, canalization, water supply, car, airplane, electric light, radio, television terrifically.
The big reliefs in the immediate life sphere of the people, especially for the women, is probably the washing machine, the fridge and the vacuum cleaner.

A VILLAGE KANTOW (with estate Kantow before 1945) nearby D-Neuruppin/Brandenburg. 1538 and in 1701 becomes in [RP09] Mülverstedt, in 1863 in each case " from Wittstruck on Cantow " performed. The place name CANTOW corresponds to the today's village D-KANTOW nearby Neuruppin. |
1975-1982:
Hans Joachim Cantow on it building up (1923-, Freiburg i. Br., forefather branch Heinrich Cantow) in collaboration with Priest Georg Gruber (Grandson of Hedwig Martha Frey, born Cantow has in 1879-1970, forefather branch Johann Abraham Cantow) and Josef CANTO (1898-1986, Mönchengladbach) a computer-aided family tree with new forefather branches and a lot of particulars provides.
2000-2014 :
I (Siegfried Cantow, 1943-, forefather branch Johann Abraham Cantow) have supported by prenamed bases and my supplements from church register and family book of Waldböckelheim and new records of frienly helpers, so I can present informations in the Internet. Especially is gratifying that I could exchange myself about many years with Bernhard Cantow (1938 - 20xx) in Viereck with our forefather search, thanks to our common interest.
RHINELAND:
1970/ 2005:
Josef Canto finds out in 1970 from a colleague that his forefathers come from Schlossböckelheim.
He is interested in further information and does this recordings.
His daughter Radegund Canto places at disposal this for me in 2005.
BANAT:
2005:
Elisabeth Weinschrott (born Kanton) writes down her forefather branch to Schloßböckelheim.
A kind of supplement:
... well, that one remembers now and then almost forgotten statements of the old-ancestors. My aunt Maria (1915-97) and my father (1917-65) must have mentioned on reason of my interest sometimes that the uncle Theobald has a family tree in Hoppenwalde. My grandfather Franz Cantow meant (1881-1945) that also he is on it.
I shouted in 2000 in Hoppenwalde in .... and it was right!!!
... and thus was woken up more exact interest in me. I supposed up to now not right that the Cantows had settled first in Viereck/ Western Pomerania (Vorpommern) instead of in Hoppenwalde. The place Waldböckelheim/ Rhine Palatinate was completely unknown to me up to now.
The fact that the forefathers from the Palatinate came was still clearly live to see at my time about 1950 in Viereck, because peopels spoke in Viereck "vierecksch" and this was quite clearly a Palatinate dialect. That so existed no more in other colonist's villages. Then I bought to myself the pc-program Forefather Gallery 3.0 and place at disposal herewith my knowledge for a lot of Cantow branches in the Internet. I am looking forward to getting very useful tip and about help with a lot of necessary supplements. This is guaranteed (!) work on lifetime ... and longer...
A "reunion of families meeting" would be certainly a nice and helpful thing. So that it becomes a success, several persons would have to prepare certainly the meeting. But whooo has tiiime for it?
